Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG)

Receiving the CIG credential recognizes that the individual understands and can successfully apply the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) accepted principals of interpretation to deliver quality interpretive programs. This is particularly important to employers who hope to gain a competitive edge in the marketplace by providing certified interpretive guides.

CIG students work in a great variety of places – they may be tour guides in historic homes, interpretive park rangers, outfitters on river treks, museum or zoo docents or any other of a number of jobs in any number of settings. No matter where they work or volunteer, by attending this training session they will learn to improve their communication skills, awaken their creativity and enhance their visitor contact.Class Excercise

This Certified Interpretive Guide workshop is sanctioned by the NAI. Workshop instructors have successfully completed an NAI training program to become Certified Interpretive Trainers. The full support of the trainers will be made available to participants during this workshop in order to help goals be accomplished.

As required by NAI, this is a 32-hour course and all participants must pass a written exam with a score of 80% or better and demonstrate proficiency in a practical application of interpretation. All of these requirements can be met by attending the NAI CIG training course.

Inservice Training for Interpretive Personnel

“The Story’s the Thing,” said Freeman Tilden in his landmark book, INTERPRETING OUR HERITAGE. He went on to recommend that an Interpreter “tell a story rather than recite an inventory” in order to "provide a much higher service than the teaching of facts.”

This hands-on, interactive training provides insight into the applications of story technique in interpretive work, and teaches each Interpreter how to discover the relevant stories and share them in ways that relate to something within the personality or experience of each visitor.

  • Half, full and four-day workshops available.

Inservice Training for Area Educators

Empowering the role of “story / educator,” this in-service training helps teachers discover the power of storytelling in the classroom, and how to use story technique throughout the curriculum for better motivation and retention.

Storytelling Events at Selected Park or Community Sites

The Interpretive Voices story offerings highlight gifted performances as well as educational thought that embraces a wide variety of storytelling styles and a huge repertoire of tales, and are guaranteed to excite and inspire audiences within an interpretive site or in local schools. School visits complement the role of an interpretive site as a community outreach, and needs can be tailored to each location.

Students As Interpreters / Storytellers - A Community Outreach Program
(A full week residency)

A child’s confidence and motivation to learn will soar as they enter the safe and fun performing side of story. Multi-visits with children will have their interest, language skills, and creativity flowing with enthusiasm after experiencing such a residency. Follow-up work for classroom teacher is left for further incentive to learning.
