Empowering
Interpretive Personnel in Attaining their Goals
Interpretive Voices builds on the philosophies and teachings
of Freeman Tilden. “The Story’s the Thing,” he said in his landmark book,
Interpreting Our Heritage. He went on to recommend an Interpreter
“tell a story rather than recite an inventory” in order to "provide a much
higher service than the teaching of facts.” Interpretive Voices
is able to pass on to interpreters and educators instruments providing that
"higher service.”
What do
Interpretive Voices Workshop Participants Learn?
- How and why
to reawaken the creativity and powers of imagination.
- How to use
creativity and imagination as tools to get beyond just the facts and
stimulate the visitor's whole experience.
- How to use
“storyspeak” rather than “infospeak” to enhance attention and retention.
- How to use
the “tools of the storyteller” - - eye contact, facial expression, vocal
expression, body language and gesture - -to enrich communication and
enliven presentations.
- How to
discover the relevant and compelling stories, and be able to share them in
ways that relate to something within the personality or experience of each
visitor.
HOW DOES THE
TRAINING WORK?
Interpretive Voices training sessions are adapted
to the specific needs and interests of each unique venue. This hands-on,
interactive training provides immediate exposure to the application of story
technique and tools, as well as the process of developing and using these
tools in interpretation. Creativity and imagery are encouraged through
exercises, which reawaken and celebrate the inventiveness in each of us.
Participants are involved in activities that allow them to experience the
power of metaphor to convey fact and passion. Group exercises guide
participants in using metaphor to describe and define their particular
resource, exploring ways in which words, senses, body language and vocal
expression can be used to bring natural history, science and past events to
vivid life. As participants gain confidence in their ability to apply
metaphor and story to interpretation, they are engaged in creating and/or
enhancing their individual interpretative programs with these tools.
Opportunities are provided for sharing and refining these skills in the
safety of one-to-one environments and within the group. Participants emerge
with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment, and with a new ability to
share the “passionate fact” and find those “compelling stories”.
